UC San Diego: The Teaching + Learning Commons

This institutional showcase features the Teaching + Learning Commons at UCSD. The Commons is unique—in its creation, operation, and composition. It is an outcome of a university-wide initiative and Strategic Planning process, through which more than 250 staff, faculty, administrators, students, and community members participated in its conception and creation. The Commons is a system-level structure that acts as an integrative organization working with all units on campus to synergize the teaching and learning efforts. A suite of services and programs are in place to benefit educators, graduate students, and undergraduate students. From course-specific active learning support for faculty, to tutoring and Supplemental Instruction, to a suite of institution-wide tools to help students engage with and capture experiences, the Commons provides a comprehensive platform to support student and faculty success. The Teaching + Learning Commons is unique in the integrative way it supports the institutional mission and student success, and in its commitment both to base its instructional and pedagogical strategies on state-of-the art knowledge about how people learn and to assess the efficacy of such activities.
