Institutional Showcase Field Trip: NewSchool of Architecture + Design
NewSchool of Architecture + Design: Architecture for the 99%: Nepal Studio – Teaching Center and Demonstration Site
Participants in this campus field trip will learn about an undergraduate project designed to help Nepal to rebuild after the 2015 earthquakes. This project exemplifies NewSchool’s mission to nurture and inspire design-minded students. NewSchool graduates demonstrate a firm foundation of critical thinking, ethical behavior, and a culture of professional practice on their way to becoming socially responsible leaders of change for our global society. The field trip will feature student work to develop the design for “Neeta’s Village” in Panauti, Nepal. This collaborative studio project held in Spring 2016 has inspired the development of a real project on a site that is currently under development. It will showcase sustainable, affordable and seismically-safe design solutions for rebuilding of homes destroyed by the earthquakes in Nepal. The center will also serve as a location to teach and disseminate these techniques to other villages in Nepal. The showcase session will feature faculty, students who were involved in the studio, and representatives of the client, the San Diego-based Bishwa Seva organization.
